Attempt to rank teams by their youth prospects.

A ‘prospect’ is any player under 25 (except Justin Herbert) who is above a certain ‘adjusted overall’ – adjusted overall provides some bonuses for speed and age. The idea being to only choose young players who are either useful now, or will be useful if devved well.

Each prospect was then given a ‘prospect rating’ which is basically their adjusted overall with extra weightings for age and position. For position value I used this https://overthecap.com/positional-value-in-the-nfl except I reduced OL as noone cares about them.

 

I then used this to build the below.

 

• The example youth ratings are to give a rough idea of what sort of player represents each score
• The top 20 prospects is self-explanatory
• The Youth Index is drive by how many Youth Prospects you have, and how good they are
• The average ovr and average adj ovr is the averages for each team’s Youth Prospects
• The avg score is the average score of all of each team’s Youth Prospects (see table right)

This spreadsheet (hopefully you can get it) should be the full list of Youth Prospects, their scores, teams etc

I’d say below is working fairly well. But let me know if you disagree with any parts and if you feel like any different players should have made the top 20 list.

 

• I think there’s no surprises that the Rams are at the bottom of the list given how few draft picks they have made recently
• The Jets being top, is unlikely to be surprising
• The Panthers coming out well as a combination of a good core of young prospects and them being speedy too
• Despite having two top 10 prospects, the Buccaneers are still 19th, which probably suggests a lack of depth there
• The Colts, Falcons and Cardinals while not having many young players look to have quality over quantity

*Justin Herbert was excluded as he completely broke the rating system. For example, If I left him in Micah Parsons was rated as a 6 comparatively due to QBs being so highly valued.
