Madden 23 – roster ratings & rankings and team ovr – EA ratings vs Adjusted ratings

Attached/embedded (I’m not sure how this works) should be my interpretation of roster rankings – based off of the EA revealed ratings for Madden 23 (with some adjustments)

 

The adjustments

 

Firstly, I have created an ‘adjusted overall’ for each player to try and better represent the likelihood of that player’s use and their effectiveness.

The adjustments weight a player’s ovr depending on if they are under or over 25 and on if they are under/over certain speed points (dependant on position).

 

I’ve also included what EA says each team overall is – but I’ve no idea how they work it out and it seems like BS to me

 

Displaying Overalls

I used these adjusted overalls to predict the most likely starting line-ups of teams. Assuming a team is made up of:

Front 7: two Edge Rushers, two Interior D Line and three Linebackers

DBs: Three Cornerbacks and two Safetys

OL: Five Offensive line-men

Receivers/HBs: Three Wide Receivers, one Tight end and one Half Back

 

I’ve included a display of position group ratings, offense and defense ratings and team overall ratings using both my adjusted overall and EA’s standard overall (see which you prefer).

The grouped ratings are made up of the mean of the players that make up that position group.

I’ve left it in alphabetical order so its easier to compare between the two

 

Observations:

• The Bucs come out #1 by a long way in both models and are strong across the board
• The biggest movers between my model and EA’s:

– Ravens are 17 places lower in EA’s rating (T20) than mine (3) – they get punished harshly for a poor front 7 outside of their interior but my ratings are much kinder to their receivers/HB and OL

– Dolphins and Jaguars are two other teams that seen as much better in my ratings – both teams have a lot of good youth and speed which is rewarded

– On the flip side. The Titans do much better in the EA ratings. Their QB, receivers and front 7 are all hit hard by my adjustments.

– For me, personally, the Broncos make out much better than I thought they would in both set of ratings. I’ve complained a lot about feeling hard done by – but maybe everyone got screwed over except for a few powerhouse teams

 

I will probably come out with a more in-depth piece that goes team-by-team and shows the full starting line up – but that would require me to put together a powerpoint style piece which would take a while. Whereas this hasn’t taken me too long overall
