Better League TE Rankings

The best position on the field, the Tight End, combines the blocking ability of a lineman with the athletic ability of a star WR.

Too big to cover with a DB, too fast to cover with a LB, a good Tight End can create chaos for the defence.

We tasked 15 members of the Better League to rank their top 5 TEs, not the top 10 as there isn’t as much depth as other positions.

Thank you to Cam, Lucky, Chase, Ben, Steel, Cmass, Dan, Alex, Jesse, Matt, Little Alex, Connor, Cody, Hero and Austin for providing their lists. Unfortunately we lost 3 users from the WR rankings but hopefully we find them again in time for RB rankings, which shall be released tomorrow!

Scoring system differs slightly from the WR rankings due to less players. A TE ranked #1 would receive 5 points, #2 rank receive 4 points etc etc down to #5 rank TE receiving 1 point. This means the highest overall points a player could reach is 75.

12 Tight Ends in total received votes

We’ve also added in both PFF rankings and Fantasy ADP to compare rankings to.

Big thanks to Hero for giving me the PFF rankings and they look backwards, to how players performed in 2022

Half point PPR was selected for Fantasy ADP but there’s not a huge difference in the scoring systems.

Tied#10 – Jordan Addison – 1 point

Tied #10 – Dawson Knox – 1 point

Tied #10 – Mike Gesicki – 1 point

#9 – Cole Kmet – 2 points

Jordan Addison has now received votes at both WR and TE. The rookie, yet to play a snap in the NFL, is expected to play at the Wide Receiver position at the professional level however we might have a scout in BL that sees something special in the kid.

Dawson Knox, Mike Gesicki and Cole Kmet all received 5th placed votes, with Kmet receiving 2 of them

#8 – Pat Freiermuth – 6 points

The third year TE had a breakout 2nd season for the Pittsburgh Steelers, recording over 700 yards as he became one of Kenny Pickett’s go-to targets.

Freiermuth was placed on 3 users list, with a 3rd, 4th and 5th placed selection.

Madden ranking – 8th overall, 85 rating

PFF ranking – 5th overall, 75.5 grade

Fantasy ADP – 9th overall

#7 – Dallas Goedert – 8 points

Dallas stepped into Zach Ertz shoes as TE1 in the 2021 season and went from strength to strength, recording 830 yards in 2021 and on pace for 1000 yards in 2022 before missing 5 games through injury.

Dallas made an appearance on 4 seperate lists, with a high of 3rd place.

Madden ranking – 5th overall, 89 rating

PFF ranking – 4th overall, 78.2 grade

Fantasy ADP – 6th overall

#6 – Kyle Pitts – 9 points

The 4th overall pick in 2021 welcomed himself to the NFL with a 1000 yard rookie season, only the 2nd rookie TE ever to reach that mark. Mixture of injury and poor QB play held him back in his 2nd year. Still only 22 years old, sky’s the limit for the Gator great.

Pitts featured on 5  lists, with a high of 3rd overall.

Madden ranking  – 6th overall – 87 rating

PFF ranking – Below 15th, unknown grade (Injury probably hampered here)

Fantasy ADP – 5th overall

#5 – Darren Waller – 14 points

Injured for most of the 2022 season, Waller slipped out of many users top 5 ranking. Just 3 years removed from a 100 catch, nearly 1200 yard season, Darren Waller looks to reinvigorate his career in New York after being traded to the Giants.

7 users made room for Darren Waller on their lists, with a high of 3rd place.

Madden ranking – 7th overall, 86 rating

PFF ranking – Below 15th, unknown grade (Injury probably hampered here)

Fantasy ADP – 7th overall

#4 – TJ Hockenson – 18 points

Drafted to Detroit 8th overall, TJ was labelled as a do-it-all TE with elite level blocking traits and enough juice to make a mark in the passing game. A stop start career through injury and Matt Patricia led to a trade to the Vikings where he snagged 500 yards in only half a season.

TJ made an appearance on more than half users lists with a total of 9 selections. He received a high vote of #3

Madden ranking – 4th overall, 90 rating

PFF ranking – 6th overall, 73.2 grade

Fantasy ADP – 3rd overall

#3 – Mark Andrews – 35 points

Mark has elevated to one of the truly elite go-to options in the receiving game. His size and speed combo allowed him to set league-wide marks for catches and yards in 2021. The QB-TE combo of Mark Andrews and Lamar Jackson signed for the long term gives Baltimore a positive outlook for a strong offensive year.

Mark Andrews appeared on 13 out of 15 lists with multiple users ranking him #2 overall.

Madden rating – 3rd overall, 95 rating

PFF rating – 3rd overall, 80.7 grade

Fantasy ADP – 2nd overall

#2 – George Kittle – 56 points

George Kittle has done it all since coming into the NFL; blocking, catching, running the ball. He can finish a game with 1 catch for 8 yards and still be the best player on the field that day. A rotating cast of character at QB in 2022 caused a dip in yardage but he finished the season with a career high in TDs.

Kittle was placed on 14 out of 15 lists and received a lone 1st placed vote.

Madden rating – 2nd overall, 96 rating

PFF rating – 2nd overall, 84.7 grade

Fantasy ADP – 4th overall

#1 – Travis Kelce – 74 points

Some have called him the greatest TE ever. He’s recorded 7 straight seasons over 1000 yards receiving.  Holds the single season record for TE yards at 1416. The past 3 seasons he’s led the league in TDs for TEs. Oh yeah, and also won 2 superbowls.

Kelce appeared on every single list submitted, including 14 1st place votes. He received a single 2nd placed vote to rob him of a unanimous #1.

Madden ranking – 1st overall, 99 rating

PFF ranking – 1st overall, 91.3 grade

Fantasy ADP – 1st overall

Thank you again to all those kind enough to take the time and submit a list, I think it made for a tremendous ranking.

Surprise to see no Evan Engram or David Njoku votes.

Some Bos predictions for who may crack the list next season:

  • Chigoziem Okonkwo
  • Sam LaPorta (Go Lionz)
